Chameleon Church
Chameleon Church is light psych verging on Sunshine
psych at times. The anthologized song "Camillia Is Changing" is peasant
and moody.
Beyond the music Chameleon Church is known for having
a famous drummer - Chevy Chase of Saturday Night
Live fame. There he is on the album back, no denying it.
There was a bio released in 2007 called I'm Chevy Chase and You're
Not by Rene Fruchter. The band is brought up twice. Once is because
of his first marrage:
"The first of Chevy's three marriages took place in 1969.Chevy met Susan
Hewitt, a pretty and lively young woman, whom he described as a "groupie,"
at one of the rock concerts he was playing, with the group Chameleon Church
, in Wesleyan. Chevy was playing drums. He was twenty five and she was
nineteen. "
Later they talk about the group again. There are some things that seem
wrong in the retelling. They say Chevy played in the Ultimate
Spinach? Playing as Orpheus was a low moment
but they do mention it. Branding his ex-band members as heroin addicts
who have died is more than rude and inaccurate. Ted Myers
is still alive - see here, and Tony Scheuren
currently has
a web site up and is still recording up to 2002.
Here are the paragraphs:
He played for groups such as Chameleon Church, Orpheus, and Ultimate
Spinach, ensembles that were part of the "Boston sound, which was known
for its overuse of violins," Chevy says, "I was the drummer, drowned out
by the violins. There were five of us, and we were told we sounded like
the Association."
On occasions when Orpheus was overbooked, Chevy explains, "we toured
as Orpheus." He recalls one tour where they were billed as Orpheus, playing
at the University of Kentucky. "I remember being in that gym, which was
filled with Orpheus fans. We knew all their songs. And someone in the
audience yelled, 'You're not Orpheus, ' and I shouted back, 'Yes ,we are!'"
Boston sound was the sound. He members of Chameleon Church wore Nehru
jackets on the cover of the album. It was post-Sgt. Pepper, and every
group was trying to be the Beatles. Had we been really attentive-that
is to say, had the rest of my group not been heroin addicts, all of them
dead today- we might have gone somewhere." Chevy was "a pothead" but did
not follow the group in its heroin use. Chevy stopped touring with the
rock groups when his work as a writer became more steady, and he did not
have the time to do both.
